What kind of leather should I look for when buying a leather belt?

When it comes to buying a leather belt, one of the most important factors to consider is the type of leather used to make it. Different types of leather have different characteristics, so choosing the right one is crucial to ensuring that you get a belt that is both durable and stylish.

The toughest and most durable type of leather used in belts is full-grain leather. This type of leather is made from the top layer of the hide, and it retains all of the natural grain patterns and imperfections of the animal skin. It is these grains and natural fibres that make full-grain leather so durable and long lasting. Since full-grain leather is uncorrected for blemishes and imperfections, it is a unique, natural look that is highly sought after by many people.

Another grade of leather that is commonly used in the production of belts is top-grain leather. This type of leather is made from the second layer of the hide, which is known for its softness and flexibility. Top-grain leather is often considered to be of a slightly lower quality than full-grain leather, as it has been sanded and buffed to remove any imperfections or blemishes. This gives it a smoother and more uniform appearance, but it also reduces its durability and strength compared to full-grain leather.

Genuine leather is another type of leather used to mass produce belts, but it is generally considered to be lower in quality. This type of leather is made from the lower layers of the hide, and it has been heavily processed and treated to create a uniform appearance. Genuine leather belts are often less expensive than full-grain or top-grain leather belts, but they are also not as durable or as high quality.

The last type of leather commonly used in belts is bonded leather, a type of leather that is made from leather scraps that are bonded together with adhesive. This type of leather is the lowest quality and is used in the production of inexpensive belt commonly found in department stores. Bonded leather is not as durable as other types of leather, and is more prone to cracking and peeling over time, with a lifespan of less than 1 year.

When choosing a leather belt, it's important to consider the type of leather used and how it will affect the overall quality and durability of the belt. We only recommend full-grain leather belts as they are the most durable and high-quality. These belts are heirloom pieces and will last a lifetime and longer when taken proper care of.

At NAB Leather, we only use 9-10oz full-grain leather to make our belts. All our belts are rooted in our foundation belief: a leather belt must stand the test of time. These belts will never stretch or rip around the holes and do not need to be replaced every fews months or years. Beyond the durability, full-grain leather belts also minimizes waste which make them more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Well worth, the investment!
